The Education Programmes

Our carefully prepared environment includes

Low level wooden shelves containing the materials which children have complete independence to select from and include each of the Montessori areas of learning as follows:

  • Mathematics
  • Literacy & Language
  • Cultural Studies – Understanding the World, including both people of the world and nature
  • Activities for Everyday Living
  • Education of the Senses

In addition to the Montessori materials

There are many other activities including:

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • Expressive Art and Design Materials
  • Science and Technology activities
  • Well stocked book corner
  • Dedicated role play area

Our children also enjoy

A carefully planned programme of special activities and events including:

  • Visits from key people in the community such as a police officer, doctor and fire fighter
  • Family Week, where parents/grandparent/carers come in to talk to the children about their jobs, holiday experiences, hobbies, culture and pets
  • Events throughout the year including Christmas festivities and the celebration of many festivals from different cultures and religions around the world, which often include music, dance, storytelling and cooking.

The setting has a beautiful garden that children have access to throughout their day in all weathers. All the materials from the indoor classroom can be taken outside and enjoyed on the AstroTurf area at the front of our garden and sports activities including cricket, rugby, athletics, gymnastics, golf and tug of war can be enjoyed at the rear of the garden, along with Forest Schools education and gardening activities in the middle of the garden. We also back onto the Old Colfeian playing fields which can be used for bigger events and help add to the wonderful, nature rich outlook of the setting.

Maria Montessori emphasised the need for children to explore the real world. She said

A child, more than anyone else, is a spontaneous observer of nature.

Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.

In addition, our children enjoy a carefully planned programme of outings and events including a sports day, a teddy bears picnic, nature walks and visits to a local shop and school.
